Atilio "T" Ferdenzi (1933) Atilio Ferdenzi graduated Ashland High School in 1933. He was a 3-sport star in football, basketball and baseball and he captained both the basketball and football teams. Ferdenzi was a mainstay in the Clockers backfield through the early 1930s serving as both a running back and quarterback during his career. He led Ashland to their first undefeated season in 1932 under head coach “Grump” Walker. And he is most remembered for scoring all of the points in a 24-6 routing of Hopkinton to finish the season. Ferdenzi took his game to the next level at Boston College where he starred on the gridiron and played varsity baseball as well. |
Robert "Buddy" Kokins (1944)
Robert “Buddy” Kokins graduated Ashland High School in 1944. Kokins earned 12 varsity letters starting for the Clockers in football, basketball, and baseball freshmen through senior year. In the Fall, Kokins captained the 1943 undefeated squad and was a star player in the backfield. On the basketball court is where he really left his mark. Playing at center, Buddy scored 227 points in the 1944 season. This was in an era of 15 game seasons and no 3-point play. His point total set a new single-season record for Ashland.

Gus Carlson (1951) Gus Carlson graduated Ashland High School in 1951. He is considered by many to be the best athlete to have ever worn the royal blue and white. Gus starred as a shooting guard on the court and a catcher on the diamond. He came onto the athletic scene almost instantly earning first team all-star honors on the baseball team as an eighth grader and gaining the starting shooting guard position on the basketball court as a freshman. He was most widely admired for his play at quarterback, fullback, linebacker, and kicker on the football field. Gus captained the football team who snapped Weston’s 19-game win streak. Ashland would go on to capture a 19-game win streak of their own traveling the road that was paved by Gus Carlson. |
Hugo "Scooch" Giargiari (1954) Hugo “Scooch” Giargiari graduated Ashland High School in 1954. Giargiari started every varsity game for all four years across three seasons for the Clockers. Naturally he was also a 3-sport captain as a senior. In basketball he played forward and averaged 14 points a game. In baseball he played centerfield and hit .415 as a senior. He is most remembered for his play on the football field. Scooch started at quarterback for the 1952 undefeated team and throughout the school’s longest win streak of 19 games from 1951-1953. He won the MetroWest scoring title accumulating 96 points in only 8 games and he scored 32 total touchdowns over his 4 year football career. Giargiari continued his athletic success at Holy Cross playing both football and baseball. He gave back to his hometown coaching the football program through a very successful run from 1973-1979. Most notably, the 1977 team finished 10-0 in the regular season and captured the Tri Valley League Championship. |
Louis Mancini (1967) Lou Mancini graduated Ashland High School in 1967. Mancini lettered in football, gymnastics, wrestling, and track and field. He is most recognized for his success on the mat on Ashland’s first ever varsity wrestling team in 1967. Mancini never lost a dual meet in his wrestling career. He went 11-0 in matches for Ashland High in just one year of wrestling. Mancini capped off his season by becoming Ashland’s first state champ and finishing as runner-up in New England. Lou wrestled for Boston State College where he continued his dominance by compiling a dual meet record of 42-0. He has since given back to his hometown, serving as a teacher and coach in the Ashland School District for close to 40 years. |
Julie Phipps (1996)
Julie Phipps graduated Ashland High School in 1996. Julie was a 2-time TVL All-Star on the volleyball court and a 3-time TVL All-Star for the Shot Put in the winter. She also set the school shot put record and the Class D meet record in 1994 while capturing the Class D State Championship. On the softball diamond is where Julie really shined. Starring as the pitcher and first baseman on the softball team, Phipps earned TVL MVP honors in ’94, ’95, and ’96. She was also recognized as a 2-time Globe and Herald All-Scholastic. Julie compiled a 60-7 record and 586 strikeouts in 4 seasons. In 1996, Phipps won the Boston Globe Division 3 Player of the Year while captaining the team to a Division 3 State Title. Phipps continued her softball career at Merrimack College and then Assumption College where she became the NCAA Division 2 National Batting Champ in 1999 hitting .576. |
Kevin Maines (1991-2002)
Kevin Maines coached at Ashland High School from 1991-2002. After taking over the football program in 1991, Maines led Ashland to their first winning season in almost a decade with the 1993 squad. He followed that up just two years later with Ashland’s first Super Bowl Championship team in 1995, capturing the TVL Championship to go along with the Eastern Mass. Division 6B crown. Coach Maines also served as head baseball coach from 1995-2002. In 2000, he led Ashland to a 24-2 record, a TVL Title, and the Division 3 State Title. Coach Maines epitomizes leadership and continues to serve as a positive example for all high school coaches.
1996 Softball Team
The 1996 Softball Team amassed a 25-2 record (16-1 in the Tri Valley League). Under the leadership of legendary Coach Dave Hunt and Bob Torosian, the girls finished the season as TVL Champions, Division 3 South Sectional Champions, and Division 3 State Champions. Ashland High School Athletic Hall of Famer Julie Phipps, TVL All-Star Catcher Kelly Rund, and TVL All-Star Short Stop Jackie Lloyd led the team through a 6-0 playoff run to capture the state title. Other senior teammates included Jill Carey, Christine Amico, Paola Gaine, Kristen Zawada, Jennifer Meade and Rachel Vachon. Leah Kamataris, Jill Deliago, Sheri Piascik, Chrissy Andronico, Amy Curlett, Keri Giangrande, Michele Leporati, Brooke Perry, and Becky Karb all contributed as under-classmen.
